WHAT'S NEW FROM SPATIAL VISION?

1. Release of National Environmental Modelling Platform

Testing of the national PEMS Demonstrator application has recently been completed and a formal evaluation of the application will commence in late March 2008. The term ‘PEMS' stands for Platform for Environmental Modelling Support. The basic objective of PEMS is to provide a platform which supports the SI needs of modellers and decisions support systems.

2. Update on BioSIRT - national biosecurity application

BioSIRT (Bio-Security, Surveillance, Incident Response and Tracing) is a new computer application being developed by Spatial Vision under a nationally coordinated program on behalf of all Australian Jurisdictions for managing emergency and routine incidents of disease, pests or incursions. BioSIRT is a web-based J2EE application which makes use of open standards GIS protocols to maximise interoperability with Jurisdictional GIS systems. BioSIRT uses a number of open source GIS servers including MapServer and GeoServer to deliver its internal spatial functionality.

3. Development of new Forest Produce Sales system

In June 2007, the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment awarded Spatial Vision the contract to develop a new licensing and invoicing system to manage the processes surrounding the sale of sawlogs, firewood and other forest produce from Victorian State forests. The Forest Produce Sales System (FPSS) is intended to replace and extend exisiting systems which no longer meet the needs of the department. The first phase of the contract was to develop a detailed functional requirements specification and technical design for FPSS. The second phase is to develop and deliver the FPSS application.

4. Field Verification of Vicmap Book Data

On behalf of the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment and Country Fire Authority (CFA), Spatial Vision recently produced over 1,500 copies of maps covering the North West Vicmap Book area. These maps will be distributed by CFA to local brigades in the North West for data checking purposes. The maps contain the latest VicMap data in addition to information transferred from previous CFA Mapbooks. The main focus of the map checking project involves the validation of road information and the identification of strategic water points. Brigades have also been encourages to identify any information on the maps that requires correction or further investigation.

5. North Central CMA - Enterprise Web Mapping

North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) located in northern Victoria recognises that Geographic Information System (GIS) technology will continue to play an important role in its future as it is better integrated into their business systems and processes.

Spatial Vision is assisting North Central CMA to realise its vision for an enterprise GIS and recently assisted CMA staff with implementation of the second stage of their GIS strategy. North Central CMA officers and Spatial Vision are now implementing the third stage that involves deployment of an internal Web Browser for exploring and publishing spatial data from their Geospatial Data Catalogue. The Web Browser application will be known as the North Central CMA Information Mapping Service (IMAP)

COMPLETED PROJECTS

6. Deployment of Victoria's Vegetation Information System

The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Division within the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment engaged Spatial Vision to develop user requirements, specifications and a data model for the automation of Bioregional EVC benchmarks within Victoria to use as a basis for supplying native vegetation data at regular intervals to the national Vegetation Information System. Spatial Vision was subsequently engaged to develop the Victorian Vegetation Information System.

7. Specialised ArcGIS Training for Rio Tinto Alcan

Rio Tinto Alcan runs a major bauxite mining operation in Weipa, Far North Queensland. The Weipa mine, located 900km north-west of Cairns, supplies bauxite to refineries for sale on the international market. Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa has been using GIS in its mining operations for over 20 years. Recently the organisation expanded the use of GIS with ESRI's ArcView being deployed to a number of staff across the Mine Planning, Environment, Regeneration, Community Relations and Technical Services teams. In order to maximise the use of ArcView by these new users, Spatial Vision was commissioned to undertake a customised introductory ArcView training course.

8. New Murray River Book Released

Spatial Vision has just released the latest booklet in the very successful Murray River Access series. The new, orange booklet covers the Wemen to Mildura section of the river. Designed for visitors touring the area, this booklet has information on major walks and picnic, camping, boating and fishing facilities within the parks and forests in NSW and Victorian. The booklet is targeted at the many visitors to the region who use the river for fishing, skiing, walking, camping, picnicking, or stay in nearby towns such as Wemen, Gol Gol, and Mildura and want to take a leisurely drive around the river.

9. New Outdoor Recreation Guide Released

Spatial Vision has just launched a new Outdoor Recreation Guide. Each Recreation Guide is packed with visitor information including touring routes and attractions, also main walks, with detail relating to distance, duration and level of difficulty. The new Outdoor Recreation Guides will become a series covering key touring locations around the state. The first guide in this series is the Northern Grampians to be followed shortly by the Southern Grampians.

11. Wall Maps and other map products derived from Spatial Vision's Vicmap book

Spatial Vision produces a wide range of map based products that draw heavily on Spatial Vision's award winning Vicmap Book series of topographic map books. Examples of the value added products Spatial Vision is producing as an adjunct to its Vicmap Book series, include:

- Wall maps with the content of the Vicmap Book map pages directly replicated, with the addition of client data. (For further information http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/projects.htm#cfaregion)

- Wall and firetower maps that use base map content of the Vicmap Book maps pages enhanced with satellite image backdrop. (For further information http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/projects.htm#dse-sw)

- Township maps provided as a stand alone map product for each town that includes all features of the existing Vicmap Book township maps, plus an accompanying street index. (For further information http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/projects.htm#township)

VICMAP CORNER:

12. Victoria Police use of Vicmap Book Data

Victoria Police has purchased an Enterprise License for the state-wide digital version of Spatial Vision's Vicmap Book. Victoria Police has purchased the ECW version of the mapbooks, provided to the Police as a single, state-wide ECW image for distribution and use as a backdrop within the Police corporate GIS. Victoria Police also purchased PDF versions of the mapbook, allowing the mapbook images to be distributed throughout Victoria Police so that the mapbook is readily accessible to staff that do not have access to GIS.

13. Incremental updates

In previous eNewsletters we have been reporting that from 2008 DSE would commence issuing Vicmap Incremental Update Format (IUF) File on a weekly rather than a fortnightly frequency. Although the new seed files (dated 23/12/2007) have been issued (all Spatial Vision NEXUS clients should have received these by now from either Spatial Vision or Logica), the IUF XML files continue to be issued fortnightly rather than weekly. The word from DSE is that they are currently unsure when weekly updates will commence.

14. Vicmap Lite

In March 2008, DSE will release a new product called Vicmap Lite. It is a cut down version of key datasets in the Vicmap suite of products. The datasets have been generalised for optimum display at small scales (i.e. less than 1:250,000) and for web mapping covering the entire state. DSE has also stated that they have made a major effort to tidy and check the logic of much of the data. For example, the HUME FREEWAY is represented by 776 line segments in Vicmap Transport ROAD but only 12 segments in Vicmap Lite ROAD. In addition, instead of showing the Hume freeway as dual road centre lines, it is shown as a single line in Vicmap Lite.
