1. SV's 2002 Year in Review

The 2002 was a very successful year for Spatial Vision with revenue increasing by 27 percent to $2.1 million and staff numbers increasing to 18. As well as a number of important project commissions, Spatial Vision became a leading reseller of Land Victoria’s Vicmap Digital mapping data product range, expanded our range of touring maps, and won a number of awards for our work.

2. Spatial Vision's new Alpine Map used by Fire Fighters

Spatial Vision launched a new touring map of Victoria's Alpine Region in January. The release of the map was timely as it used by many of the fire fighters working on the huge North-East fires, as it contains the most up-to-date and reliable roading information for this area. Spatial Vision was also asked to make available a digital version of the map for use as a GIS backdrop in the DSE Fire Management Emergency Control Centre.

3. Mornington Biosphere Nomination Successful

The nomination of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port as a Biosphere Reserve was approved by the UN and announced by the Federal Minister for the Environment late last year. As Australia’s first designated biosphere reserve in over 20 years, the nomination was accompanied by a broad range of scientific and supporting material produced in part by Spatial Vision.

4. Launch of Interactive Emergency Management Plan product

Local government and water authorities are required to produce and distribute emergency management plans (EMP). These plans have traditionally been produced as hardcopy documents and frequently end up gathering dust on a shelf. Spatial Vision has developed an innovative new digital product to overcome this problem.

5. SV recruits 2003 Graduate Cadet

Spatial Vision has appointed a Graduate Cadet for 2003. Cameron Botherway was selected from leading 2002 RMIT graduates and will complete a program of project and administrative duties during 2003 aimed at providing him with a broad understanding of the spatial information industry.

6. New Senior Project Manager appointed

Due to continued growth in the company’s client base, Spatial Vision has appointed an additional Senior Project Manager, Lee Marshall. Lee has approximately 14 year’s of systems development experience, having worked in a variety of industries and technologies.  For the past 6 years Lee has worked as a client facing consultant, including 3 years with Sybase and 3 years with PwC Consulting where he achieved Principal status.  Lee has particular strengths in Client/Server and database design/development and is an accomplished Project Manager and Team Leader. New Projects:

7. Online Directory of Imagery

Spatial Vision has been appointed to develop the Vicmap Image Directory for Land Victoria. This a map-based web application will enable anyone to query a database of available satellite and aerial photography imagery within the state. In addition, parties thinking of commissioning new imagery will be able to indicate their intention and call for others who may be prepared to share the cost. Imagery suppliers will be able to advise of the availability of existing and planned imagery sets and seek expressions of interest from prospective users.

8. Improving Fox Control Programs

Spatial Vision was approached by the Arthur Ryler Institute to develop a methodology for modelling the impact of various control measures on the population of foxes in Victoria. Spatial Vision developed a sophisticated simulation environment enabling various control scenarios to be assessed.

Project Outcomes:

9. GIS Proving Invaluable for Land Development

The Department of Defence has identified a number of land holdings that are surplus to current requirements. Disposal of the land is a sensitive issue and, given the past use of the land (e.g. munitions manufacture), the disposal process requires careful investigation, analysis and planning. Spatial Vision has developed a project-based GIS to assist the management and distribution of the vast array of information generated for the project.

Technical Tips:

10. Developing VB Scripts in ArcGIS

One of the common complaints from users migrating from ArcView 3 to ArcGIS 8 is the loss of basic tools. Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is embedded in the ArcGIS suite of technologies. VBA is the best way to start understanding ArcObjects and to code those “missing tools” from ArcView 3.

Download a sample VB Script that will let you draw a polygon on screen and obtain its details (e.g. its area).
