2. Scoping out Vicmap Water

The ongoing drought and management pressures regarding Victoria's water resources have reinforced the need to better understand and manage the State's water related data. Spatial Vision has been contracted to consult a broad range of stakeholders and to document their requirements for a new statewide water resource dataset, Vicmap Water.

3. Platform for Environmental Modelling Support

Spatial Vision is developing a demonstrator version of PEMS (Platform for Environmental Modelling Support). The PEMS Demonstrator is a collaboration through the CRC for Spatial Information (CRCSI) and brings together a host of partners including the Victorian Departments of Sustainability and Environment, Justice, and Primary Industries; Geoscience Australia and Spatial Vision.

5. NSW DEC Information Review

Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is the lead agency for reporting on the status and management of biodiversity for NSW Government. Spatial Vision was contracted to undertake a high level assessment of the ability of DEC's existing natural resource databases to meet existing and future reporting needs.

7. New Web Information Pages

Spatial Vision has added a set of new Information Pages to our website. These Information Pages provide users with easy access to a range of web resources on a specific theme.

NEW PROJECTS:

8. Topological Editing System for Forests NSW

Forests New South Wales (FNSW) manages over 2 million hectares of State forests for timber production and conservation of the natural environment. Forests NSW is migrating from workstation ArcInfo to ArcGIS 9 which is a fundamental change in data storage and management for the organisation. Spatial Vision was commissioned to develop a custom topological editing system for vital forestry administrative datasets.

9. Strategic Directions for Cross-Agency Approaches to Emergency Management

Spatial Vision recently held a workshop for the Victorian emergency management community to demonstrate and discuss strategic directions for cross-agency approaches to emergency management.

VICMAP BOOK NEWS:

10. North East Map Book Released

The fourth Vicmap Book (covering north-east Victoria) in Spatial Vision's series of topographic map books has been released.

Offering 1:100,000 scale maps across the region, plus 1:50,000 maps for selected areas and 1:20,000 township maps, the mapbook has been produced using the latest Victorian Government topographic information (Vicmap).

New additions for the North-East book include Murray River Markers and 5km Kilometre route markers along major highways.

For further information http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/r_mapbook_b4.htm

11. Water Authorities using Digital Data

Water authorities running Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are finding that digital mapbook images are a really handy method of providing topographic map backgrounds.

For further information http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/r_waterdigital.htm

12. Sales Reaching Out

The sales of Vicmap Mapbooks have been reaching across various sectors. As well as the emergency services there has been a lot of interest by other state government agencies.

In addition, over the last six months councils, from Ararat Rural City to Yarriambiack Shire have ordered Mapbooks.

The range of regional users of Mapbooks is fascinating, and includes balloonists, battery services, sellers of silos, pastoral companies and veterinary practices.

13. VicMap Book Extents in Google Earth

Spatial Vision has recently added a series of KML (Keyhole Markup Language) files to our web site. These files contain the map extents and map numbers for all maps contained in the 4 released Mapbooks as well as the extents for the upcoming South-East map Book (due for release in July 2007).

These files can be downloaded from our website and opened in Google Earth allowing you to zoom to any map extent in the Spatial Vision VicMap Books.

These KML files will be of interest to users who want to combine the use of Spatial Vision VicMap hardcopy Mapbooks with the free imagery and functionality available via Google Earth.

VICMAP DATA CORNER:

14. New Vicmap Features and Coverage in NSW

This will be the first of a regular column looking at Vicmap data which will review new products and any major changes to Vicmap data.

Two new feature classes added to the Vicmap Features dataset.
The feature class GEO_AREA_HYDRO_LABEL is a polygon dataset that shows the boundaries of named hydrographic features such as seas, bays, straits, inlets etc. It also shows the extent of named hydrology features such as Murray River Islands and bends.

The GEO_AREA_RELIEF_LABEL is a polygon feature class that shows the boundaries of relief features such as spurs, ranges, gaps, flats and plains.

Both of these new map features are available in Vicmap Features.

Vicmap extends further into NSW

DSE has recently announced that a new Cross border agreement between the Spatial Information Infrastructure (SII) and its NSW counterpart the LPI will lead to an increase in the coverage of some Vicmap digital data into NSW. The NSW data available as part of Vicmap will now extend 100KM into NSW for the following datasets; Vicmap Admin, Vicmap Elevation, Vicmap Features, Vicmap Hydro, and Vicmap Transport. Please note that SII is taking only one data supply a year from LPI so the data may not be the most up-to-date available.

TECHNICAL TIPS:

17. Using Styled Layer Descriptors with Web Mapping Services

This edition's technical tip explains the application of the OGC's Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) specification to enable user-defined symbolization of web map services. For example, the ability to request a map image for a chosen area and the symbolisation of a set of map layers to be displayed.
