Press Release - October 27
2004
The Victorian Department of Human Services (DHS) is responsible
for overseeing the operation of Victoria’s nine crematoria.
These facilities currently undertake some 15,000 cremations
each year and are managed by a number of cemetery trusts.
In recent years, the Department has received several applications
to establish additional crematoria facilities. As each of
Victoria’s crematoria are effectively community owned,
DHS requires a method for assessing the suitability of these
applications, and is particularly concerned with the long
term well being of the overall industry.
Spatial Vision, in conjunction with Marsden Jacob Associates
and Cumpston Sarjeant Truslove, has been engaged by DHS to
conduct a review of the Crematorium Industry in Victoria.
The review will provide the basis for DHS to assess applications
to increase the number of crematoria within the State.
Spatial Vision’s role is to use spatial analysis techniques
to define the areas serviced by each crematorium facility
and to forecast future demand for cremations within the State.
The demand forecast is based on death projections (produced
by Cumpston Sarjeant Truslove) and industry operational data
(provided by Marsden Jacob Associates and an extract from
the Victorian Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages). Using
these data, Spatial Vision will investigate the impacts of
additional facilities to determine the optimal placement for
crematorium for the State.
The result of the Team’s work will be a decision making
framework within which DHS can assess the impacts of the proposed
facilities.
