Press Release - January 20
2006
The Murray Darling Basin Commission (MDBC) recognises there
is an outstanding need to better coordinate and consolidate
the metering, monitoring and reporting of groundwater use
information across the Murray-Darling Basin. Groundwater use
has the potential to impact on shared water resources of the
Basin, particularly where groundwater and surface water systems
are connected. However, the relationships between groundwater
resource boundaries and jurisdictional boundaries and the
different approaches to groundwater reporting make this a
complex management and reporting issue.
The MDBC has engaged Spatial Vision and Bartley Consulting
to identify and document the requirements of a groundwater
information reporting framework for the Basin. A key challenge
of this project is to collate and consolidate information
that will assist the MDBC to understand the information needs
and issues related to metering, monitoring and reporting on
groundwater use from both a jurisdictional and whole of basin
perspectives.
The Spatial Vision and Bartley Consulting are undertaking
a consultative process to engage representatives of MDBC business
groups and the jurisdictional groundwater custodians to understand
the broad scope of requirements for reporting and opportunities
to improve current data collation processes.
The MDBC selected this consulting team because of their combined
expertise in groundwater management and natural resource database
design and information management.
