A First-Stop Knowledge Shop for Natural Resource Managers?

View Press Release ( 41kb)

Land & Water Australia have commissioned Spatial Vision, in partnership with EWR, a natural resource management specialist consultancy group, to undertake the feasibility study for a possible Knowledge System for natural resource managers.

Spatial Vision and EWR will team together with Geoff Park, a knowledge broker for the North Central Catchment Management Authority in Victoria.

The feasibility study will develop options for a possible ‘First-stop Knowledge Shop’ for Natural Resource Management (NRM). It is proposed that this knowledge shop allow easy access to multiple information sources, and increased coordination, cooperation and interconnection between provider agencies, and user groups. The ‘First-stop Knowledge Shop’ will build upon existing data libraries, atlases, and data delivery systems. The initial priority is to focus on the requirements of catchment management bodies and NRM Network Facilitators, and the support role played by National Government agencies to these groups. The proposed solution will help people to quickly find the most relevant information or suitable contact person.

The results and recommendations of this feasibility study will draw on an evaluation of current NRM data and information sources, knowledge management systems, and successful models from other sectors within and outside of Australia.

The general approach proposed involves developing a Conceptual Framework for a Knowledge System, including a vision of the system’s characteristics and general scope.

The Spatial Vision/EWR approach to this project aims to ensure the proposed ‘First-stop Knowledge Shop’ does not become part of the current problem (caused by many fragmented information sources), but rather a very substantial part of the solution.

National research and development organisations are providing significant input into the process and the project is being funded under the National Heritage Trust. The project is to be completed by the end of October 2005.
