Press Release - March 30 2005
Melbourne Water has contracted Spatial Vision to assist them to effectively
migrate to the GDA94 datum. Melbourne Water manages Melbourne’s water
supply catchments, remove and treat most of Melbourne’s sewage, and manage
rivers and creeks and major drainage systems in and around Melbourne.
The day to day business operations of Melbourne Water are significantly reliant
on spatially related information represented in various business systems and
the corporate GIS. Like many organisations, Melbourne Water had been reliant
on the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66) co-ordinate system that was superseded
by the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94) in 2000.
The process of migrating Melbourne Water’s extensive spatial data holdings
and applications to GDA94 presents a number of challenges.
The major issues include:
• Ensuring Melbourne Water’s staff and clients
are aware of the impact of the migration
• Managing the timing of data changes for affected business
operations
• Minimising confusion over which data/systems are GDA94
compliant
• The accuracy of data transformation for some specific
business processes
Spatial Vision was engaged to support the Melbourne Water’s GDA94 Project
Manager, Jacinta Burns, to identify the scope of impact of the conversion process
and develop a conversion strategy that addressed the key issues. According to
Ms Burns, the comprehensive conversion strategy is now in full operation. A
final cut-over date for migration of all corporate data and systems is scheduled
for this July.
Ms Burns is approaching the GDA94 migration project as an opportunity to implement
business improvements that will potentially enhance the way that GIS is currently
used and perceived by Melbourne Water personnel.
GDA94 was officially adopted by Australia on 1 January 2000
to align each of the States with a common reference system
that is directly compatible with Global Positioning Systems
and to improve data consistency and accuracy. Further details
about GDA94 can be found on the Intergovernmental Committee
on Survey and Mapping (ICSM) web site (www.icsm.gov.au).
