Rio Tinto Alcan runs a major bauxite mining operation in Weipa, Far North Queensland. The Weipa mine, located 900km north-west of Cairns, supplies bauxite to refineries for sale on the international market.
Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa has been using GIS in its mining operations for over 20 years. The company is heavily reliant on maps and mapping data for its daily operations - much of the data it uses is spatial, many of the decisions made are based on the location of physical objects or the operations at the locations of these objects. GIS can be used across the range of operations undertaken at Weipa including mine planning and management, infrastructure planning and management, and land regeneration and revegetation.

Recently the organisation expanded the use of GIS with ESRI's ArcView being deployed to a number of staff across the Mine Planning, Environment, Regeneration, Community Relations and Technical Services teams. In order to maximise the use of ArcView by these new users, Spatial Vision was commissioned to undertake a customised introductory ArcView training course. The benefit of a customised training course for the Weipa staff was that the training was conducted in their environment using their own data. This approach to training staff with data, exercises and examples familiar and relevant to their work created an environment conducive to effective learning. This type of training also allowed staff to explore how GIS could be better used in other areas of their work.
