Press Release -18 August 2008
Spatial Vision has recently completed an extensive report that forms the basis of long term planning for Government schools in the Dandenong and Springvale region of southern metropolitan Melbourne.
With an ever changing demographic composition the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) needed to determine projected long term enrolments against current school resources. It is for this reason DEECD contracted Spatial Vision to produce a report that accurately reviews future enrolments (demand) based on Australian Bureau of Statistics census data against current school enrolments and infrastructure (supply).
“The DEECD approached us to develop a study that along with other outcomes provided projected enrolments for schools in the Springvale and Dandenong area. This was based on demographic and population data with the aim that this will be incorporated into their school provision planning and allocation of capital resources,” said Stephen Farrell, Project Leader.
The major objectives of this project were to describe the extent and nature of the changing demographic composition of networks and develop long term enrolments for each of the government primary school catchment areas located in both networks.
The project also delivered individual catchment zone reports, identifying school catchment demographics, current school facilities and infrastructure as well as mapping current student address locations.
“This project resulted in a large final report due to the detail and research that went into it. For each school we reviewed past and current enrolment levels, confirmed the delineation of school catchment areas and reviewed the changing nature and quantum of school age children living within the catchments of each school.
We then used this information to develop long term enrolment forecasts for each catchment area that would allow the DEECD to look at the area in a broad prospective and use this in the process of allocating funding and resources,” said Mr. Farrell.
Data sources used for the project included DEECD, Australian Bureau of Statistics and Local Government data.
The outputs of this project are an essential tool for school provision planning staff.
Spatial Vision is currently undertaking similar studies for Bayside, Kingston, Surf Coast and the City of Greater Bendigo local government areas.
