Press Release - July 12 2006
The mission of the Victorian Department of Human Services
(DHS) is 'to enhance and protect the health and well-being
of all Victorians, emphasising vulnerable groups and those
most in need'.
DHS officers utilise a web-based service mapping tool, SMap
to visualise the capacity for overlaying multiple demand,
service activity, funding and socio-economic data sets and
assist planning and service development within DHS. SMap is
available on the DHS intranet and presents data in a series
of maps using ESRI’s ArcIMS (Internet Mapping Service)
software.
The Service and Workforce Planning Branch recently undertook
an evaluation of SMap and identified a range of modifications
required to improve usability and effectiveness of the ArcIMS
HTML interface.
Spatial Vision was contracted to undertake the development
of the enhancements which included:
- A modified table of contents allowing more efficient access
to approximately 80 thematically grouped layers
- Inclusion of an icon against each layer to allow labels
to be toggled on/off
- Colour contrast on layer titles to clearly identify layers
that are outside their scale range and a button that automatically
allowed the user to zoom to a layer’s maximum scale
range
- The ability to download the results of a spatial or attribute
query for further analysis in other applications
- The addition of a customised drop-down list to allow users
to quickly and easily zoom to the desired LGA or DHS Region
- The provision of a button to allow a higher resolution
image of the current screen view to be copied to the clipboard
for incorporation into other documents
Prior to undertaking the modifications, Spatial Vision conducted
a review of existing DHS web standards and produced a design
document outlining the proposed frame layout, the existing
CSS styles that could be used and the approach required to
deliver customised functionality.
Spatial Vision undertook the development on its own site
and enabled the client to perform beta testing prior to deployment
to the DHS environment for final acceptance testing.
