The Victorian Department of Sustainability & Environment (DSE) recently commissioned Spatial Vision to enhance their mobile application for native vegetation assessments. In 2004, DSE's Forest Information Products group developed an electronic survey for assessing Native Vegetation based on the Victorian Native Vegetation Assessment Guidelines. The survey tool was developed as a mobile application using ESRI's ArcPad software. For further information on this bush-tender tool, refer to Statewide Approach to BushTenders). Under BushTender data collected in the field by the Assessment Officer is directly imported into the Conservation Tender Management Database and used as the basis for scoring sites proposed by landholders. The use of the mobile application for BushTender was so successful, the mobile application now forms an important part of the data collection and assessment workflow for Native Vegetation auctions held across Victoria.

DSE recently developed a standard for the capture of Native Vegetation data in Victoria. One driver for this standard was to increase the amount of primary data captured during assessment. Primary data represents the real percentage of Native Vegetation viewed by the Assessment Officer prior to conversion to a percentage range or vegetation ‘score'. The capture of primary data will permit improved reporting and analysis of Native Vegetation in Victoria.

Spatial Vision has been commissioned to modify the existing ArcPad application to meet the new DSE standard involving various modifications to the application interface and logic.
