Water Authorities using Digital Data

View Press Release ( 36kb)

Water authorities running Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are finding that digital mapbook images are a really handy method of providing topographic map backgrounds. Most users of GIS are familiar with topographic maps and find the mapbooks provide a readily understood context for relating to local geography and finding assets. The water authorities assets are placed on top of the mapbook image.

The mapbooks contain a large range of map features or GIS layers that are individually symbolised. When using mapbook images, GIS administrators don't have to symbolise every component GIS layer. In addition, Web mapping systems generally perform more efficiently returning a single raster image rather than drawing large numbers of individual GIS layers to make the map.

GWMWater purchased ECW files of the mapbook images covering their operations area. Shane Schwarz from GWMWater says "We can't symbolise every last town hall or church with standard GIS data so the mapbook imagery provides an instant map base for our organisation. The ECW files can be loaded onto laptop GIS for use in mobile applications while the georeferenced TIFs provide a quality backdrop to our in-house GIS".

Digital imagery of Spatial Vision's Vicmap Books for use in GIS mapping systems is available in three formats, PDF images of each mapbook page, georeferenced jpg and tif images of the maps in the book and an ECW file of each mapbook.  The ECW file is a contiguous mosaic of the 1:100K or 1:50K images that make up each mapbook.  If you purchase the ECW file we also supply a full set of the georeferenced images.

For information about the mapbooks and to download sample images, visit our Mapbook Page.  To obtain a quote for imagery call or email Jeremy Alcorn at Spatial Vision on (03) 9691 3000 .
