Tools to Classify Native Vegetation

View Press Release ( 31kb)

As the peak natural resource management body in the Wimmera region the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority (WCMA) has responsibility for planning and implementing programs that seek to address environmental degradation and improve land management. Two key components to this work include the classification of key native vegetation areas and the identification of opportunities for enhancement of these assets.

Spatial Vision has been commissioned by the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority to develop a GIS-based toolbox that will assist CMA staff to routinely run two key remnant vegetation analyses.

The first of the tools to be developed will aim to classify and prioritise remnant vegetation areas based on a user-defined rule set. The second tool will identify and prioritise revegetation opportunities using rule sets provided by regional land managers. The toolbox will be designed in a modular fashion to enable future tool additions and will be fully integrated into the CMA's ESRI ArcGIS environment.

This commission is indicative of Spatial Vision’s position as a leading developer of GIS-based tool sets for use in biodiversity and land management activities. Previous developments include a Fox Predation Risk Calculator that provides an accumulative biodiversity risk index for pest managers, and a River Reach Sampling Strategy Tool that is assisting in the identification of sampling locations as part of river reach condition assessments.
