Spatial Vision and the Victorian Department Sustainability and Environment Office of Water have won the Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Award (APSEA) for Spatially Enabling Government for the Groundwater Management Unit Visualisation project presented in Perth on November 12th.
“Judges were impressed with this project, finding it to be an interesting application of 3D spatial technology to solve a complex problem,” said the APSEA judging panel.
Taking a new approach to analysing groundwater management units, the project used 3D modelling technology to deliver an on-line application that allowed staff with varied capabilities within the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Office of Water to explore relationships between Victoria’s groundwater units.
A key component of the solution was the ability to link to management information held in DSE’s Groundwater Management Unit Inventory. In this way, the 3D visualisation application serves as a means to explore and access related information.
Commenting on the win, Director of DSE’s Groundwater and Licensing Branch, Jennifer Fraser said “The 3D modelling work that is being developed by the spatial information industry at present is particularly interesting for groundwater and is creating new approaches and possibilities for the way groundwater data can be represented and used.”
The APSEA award follows the winning of a VSEA award for the project earlier in the year.
“To win at APSEA is not an easy thing to do and we are very excited to once again receive this honour. Both Milos Pelikan and Tim Germanchis worked very hard on this project and the award is a great recognition of the innovative approach they brought to this challenging project,” said Glenn Cockerton, Managing Director.
Spatial Vision is currently hosting the application on behalf of DSE. Public access can be found via Spatial Vision’s Surface Water and Groundwater “sector” page on the following website: http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/GMU_VRML/index.html
