Mapscape ESO Trial Successfully Completed

Spatial Vision’s new authoritative high performance digital map product ‘Mapscape’ was successfully trialled during the 2011/12 summer by Victoria’s emergency services. The trial included DSE Fire, CFA, SES and MFB who actively used the Mapscape data in iPads, in corporate GIS mapping systems and via a dedicated website.

Mapscape comprises eleven sets of seamless multi-scale, high quality raster maps optimised for emergency service use. It offers a familiar cartographic style that complements Spatial Vision’s Vicmap books already used by ESOs, and also provides benefits such as seamless and quick navigation from state wide view down to property level.

During the trial Mapscape was used by operational staff across Victoria in a wide variety of real life applications on the ground and in fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. These included planned burn operations and wildfire response.

The Mapscape trial provided valuable feedback that will help Spatial Vision continue its support of the operational needs of Victorian’s emergency service organisations through the provision of an easy to use, reliable, up-to-date and well presented topographic digital map product.

Trial participants were very supportive of the Mapscape product and believe that it builds on the successful Vicmap Book hardcopy mapping program that has been in place since 2005.

Some of the feedback we’ve received included:

“…..really good for navigation work in both aircraft and on ground….. saves on carrying a suite of map books” Steve Grant, Planned Burning Delivery Leader, DSE

“…..have had nothing but positive feedback so far (on the Mapscape iPad deployments in Bendigo and Benalla). In fact during one incident, (Mapscape) helped our Regional Manager immensely to locate a dangerous dam and identify the areas at risk, all on the side of a road……” Andrew Morrison, Operational Communications Officer, Vic SES

I was impressed with the quality and ease of use of the maps. The fact that I could access the same mapping imagery on both iPad and eMap is a great benefit. Overall, a really good product". Peter Luckock, Senior Project Officer - Resources review, CFA\State Control Centre (SCC)

“….I have to say, after using and making maps in this state for many years, I could not fault this product….” Hans Van Elmpt, Regional GIS Coordinator, Vic DSE

“…..very quick to navigate and clear to read…..crews were able to use this package (Mapscape iPad app) easier than most commonly used GPS units” Craig Hamilton and team, GIS Team Leader, DSE

Spatial Vision is currently finalising access to its new Mapscape product with Victorian ESOs and plan to have it in operational use by these organisations in July 2012.
