A critical strategic planning challenge facing large and growing metropolitan areas, like Melbourne, is the increasing pressure, and impacts, on their hinterland (peri-urban area) associated with population growth. The peri-urban areas of Melbourne represent an important component of Melbourne’s food and water security into the future, have significant biodiversity reserves and are significant locations with respect to wildfire, flood and coastal inundation management.
Spatial Vision, working in partnership with the RMIT School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning, has developed a framework to explore development scenarios and the associated impacts within the peri-urban region of Melbourne. This framework is a central component of the Sustainable Planning for Melbourne’s Peri-urban Region research program commissioned by the Peri-urban Group of Councils and funded by Sustainability Victoria.

As an adjunct to the research report, Planning Sustainable Futures for Melbourne's Peri-urban Region, Spatial Vision has developed an interactive site which presents a summary of some of the key findings from this research. The site features a series five interactive atlases enabling users to geographically explore population projections, supply and demand for land, future impacts of development and those localities where the implications of development will be most detrimental.
Importantly, the site presents a window into Melbourne’s peri-urban region in the year 2040, assuming a “business-as-usual” approach to future development. The research data indicates that development pressures and consequences will be unevenly distributed. Accordingly, the sustainability of our resources will require policies that take into account this complexity; the interactive atlases will assist in communicating the issues related to growth pressures and potential impacts on the region under various scenarios.
