Vicmap Book Edition 2 Complete

E-mail Print

Spatial Vision has finished compiling the 2nd Edition South East Region Vicmap Book and sent it to the printers for an expected release in early November.

This will complete the much improved 2nd edition series which has significantly benefited from CFA brigade field checking and major data upgrades by DSE.
Following the completion of the first edition of the Vicmap Books a comprehensive review of the map books was undertaken. This review was informed through a range of sources including user feedback from the emergency services and the general public.

The outcomes of the review resulted in a comprehensive data improvement program that has seen many changes in the 2nd Edition map books.

“CFA, DSE and Spatial Vision have worked together to significantly improve the new map book series. We are very proud of the 2nd series of Vicmap Books which will support the CFA in protecting Victorian communities and their livelihoods”, said Glenn Cockerton, Managing Director of Spatial Vision.

A new process in the production of the 2nd edition has been the re-introduction of field checking by CFA brigades. This exercise involved hundreds of check maps being sent out to CFA brigades allowing volunteers to make use of their extensive local knowledge to verify map details.

One of the key differences between this process and previous CFA map checking activities is that updates (especially those related to roads) are being made to the State’s map base, and are therefore are available to all users (including the ESTA 000 Emergency Dispatch System).

“The CFA brigades across Victoria have been very proactive throughout the development of the 2nd edition Vicmap Books and this has definitely resulted in a much improved publication for the emergency services as well as the many business and recreational users”, said Michael Black, Vicmap Book Manager.

The Vicmap Book series is a result of the 2003 Victorian Bushfire Inquiry undertaken by the Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner (OESC) who once again endorsed the adoption of Vicmap Books at Spatial Vision’s 10 year anniversary.

“I strongly urge all agencies to implement a strategy to ensure that the latest and uniform mapping information is used,” Bruce Esplin, Emergency Services Commissioner.
