What is the Extension Activity Support System Demonstrator?

The EASY demonstrator project describes an initial vision for a new online application that publishes and delivers spatial information, models and related web content for use in agricultural planning and management.

EASY is envisioned to be used by researchers and agricultural program managers as a publishing platform for spatial datasets, visualisation and analysis tools, models, reports and related web content aimed at improving agricultural planning and management.

Landholders and extension staff will use EASY to find, view, analyse and download this published information for use in their agricultural planning and management activities and also contribute back their own observational and monitoring information.

About the Demonstrator

While the final EASY application is envisioned to support a wide range of extension activities it has initially been developed as demonstrator of several key case studies or use cases. These use cases were selected to demonstrate the wide range of functionality proposed and the overall potential of the EASY application.

Demonstration 1: Landholder property definition and map viewing

The aim of use case 1 is to demonstrate EASY as a modern web mapping solution for rural land management. Use case 1 demonstrates EASY as a simple to use, map viewing application with tools to draw a farm property boundary, print a map of the property and a display list of base spatial layers including aerial photography that can be turned on and off. The use case demonstrates how the system could provide access to government published spatial datasets in an easy to use, efficient online setting. Tools for landholders to do basic queries of area, length and point-based attributes of the basic spatial layers are also included.

Demonstration 2: Create a topic package

One of the key requirements to emerge from the series of initial workshops conducted for the EASY project was that the proposed system should enable datasets and related textual information to be linked or packaged , so that it was fit for purpose for specific extension related activities. In the EASY demonstrator a ‘topic package’ is a set of datasets and related textual and graphic information that has been built for use in a specific agricultural extension program.

The primary goal of demonstration 2 is to demonstrate how EASY will be a system that enables information to be packaged together for a specific extension program. The demonstrator shows how program managers and researchers can create a new topic package by selecting spatial datasets, creating and organising web content, creating new custom datasets for landholders to contribute to and configuring the package for use by landholders and extension staff.

Demonstration 3: Use a topic package

Demonstration 3 shows EASY delivering a topic package about Whole Farm Planning. The topic package provides the source spatial datasets, web content, instructions, modelled datasets and editable spatial layers and specialised tools that a landholder would need to develop a new whole farm plan document.
