In March 2008, DSE will release a new product called Vicmap Lite. It is a cut down version of key datasets in the Vicmap suite of products. The datasets have been generalised for optimum display at small scales (i.e. less than 1:250,000) and for web mapping covering the entire state. DSE has also stated that they have made a major effort to tidy and check the logic of much of the data. For example, the HUME FREEWAY is represented by 776 line segments in Vicmap Transport ROAD but only 12 segments in Vicmap Lite ROAD. In addition, instead of showing the Hume freeway as a dual line, it is shown as a single line in Vicmap Lite.
A key feature of the new datasets is the Scale of Use, designed to reflect an appropriate scale of display for features within each feature class. Features have been coded with values which will help users to define appropriate map scales at which to display different hierarchies of data. For example, prior to Vicmap Lite, there was no widely available point dataset of Victorian Towns. Vicmap Lite Locality is a fully hierarchical dataset of towns coded for display at designated map scales.
Vicmap Lite is designed to replace Vicmap Reference which has not been updated for some time. DSE states that data in VMLITE will be updated on a yearly or half-yearly schedule. The cost of Vicmap Lite has not yet been announced by DSE, however if you are interested in this data please contact Jeremy and I will provide you with a quote as soon as the pricing becomes available.
