Community Web Mapping Portal Released

E-mail Print

In conjunction with the Connecting Country project and the Norm Wettenhall Foundation, Spatial Vision has recently released the Community Web Mapping Portal (CWMP).

The CWMP is a new initiative that allows individuals and community groups to create, view and share information about their local landscape.

A unique landscape-scale project lead by the Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forest (FOBIF), Connecting Country aims to increase, enhance and restore biodiversity across the Mount Alexander Shire.

Key to this project is the development of a “biodiversity blueprint” that will function as a hub for knowledge sharing and community decision making.

The prototype CWMP, based on the Google Maps Application Programming Interface (API), is a key part of the Connecting Country project.  In addition to the Google Maps normal Map and Satellite views, Spatial Vision has included a view based on the award winning Vicmap topographic map book series.

Aligned with the Connecting Country vision of sharing knowledge, the CWMP website allows users to create simple point based records of sites in the landscape, enter textual information about the site and create web links to other web pages that contain further information about the site.

The types of information recorded include flora and fauna sightings, weed locations, remnant protection areas, revegetation sites and other sites of significance.

Spatial Vision has provided the facility at no cost as a philanthropic and research and development project that will hopefully contribute to the success of the Connecting Country program.

“The Connecting Country project is a prime example of community groups and foundations actively working together to secure the future of their surrounding environment and we at Spatial Vision are delighted to be involved.”, said Ian Miller, Project Manager at Spatial Vision.

The Connecting Country website can be accessed at http://www.connectingcountry.org.au/
