Aquatic Fauna Database

E-mail Print
Client: Parks Flora & Fauna, Department of Sustainability and Environment

The Aquatic Fauna Database was developed by Spatial Vision in response to a Parks Flora & Fauna requirement to better record and manage the many hundreds of aquatic fauna and invertebrate surveys they perform each year in Victoria.

The new Windows based application provides not only a far more comprehensive record of survey details than its predecessor but also provides the key ability to record and view spatial information for each of the surveys performed.

A key challenge for the application was the requirement to allow for complex, yet user friendly data entry and searches by end users with a varying degree of computer skill.

To combat this issue, Spatial Vision developed a variety of innovative windows and visual controls that are powerful yet very simple to use.

To ensure a high quality of survey data, surveys pass through a strict validation process. To assist with this process, Spatial Vision developed a comprehensive validation tool. Using the tool, the many thousands of historical surveys can be “batch validated” and automatically checked for accuracy and consistency.

The addition of spatial information provides users with an extra dimension to the data they record. The Aquatic Fauna Database makes use of the “MapShare” web-based, department-wide mapping environment (also developed by Spatial Vision) to place in geographical context the collection of Victorian surveys and their key attributes.

Demonstrated Capabilities

  • Data modelling design and implementation
  • Client/server application design, development and implementation
  • Storage, searching and reporting of the complex data structure required for the Aquatic Fauna Database application.
  • Development of innovative controls to shield system complexity from users.
  • Data conversion from legacy systems
  • Seamless GIS/Client Server integration
  • Construction of complex and re-usable data validation components.

Resources

Ian Miller undertook much of the design of the data model and database and developed the GIS components of the application. Scott Manley and Shan Chen developed the Windows based components .

Technologies Applied

  • PowerDesigner (data modelling software)
  • Oracle Database
  • PowerBuilder (client/server development software)
  • Cold Fusion
  • Arc Objects & GeoDatabase development
