Horsham Fire District Wall Map

Client: Mark Corr, (03) 5362 0721 Fire Management Horsham Fire District, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Victoria

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Horsham Fire District is responsible for prevention and suppression of wildfire on public land in the central west part of the state. Early detection of fire outbreaks is crucial to the coordination of an effective response to control and suppress the fire.

In the control centre, a fire’s location is triangulated from reports from fire towers. This is done by using string lines to align bearings from a tower on a large magnetic wall map of the district.

In the past wall maps were prepared from published topographic base maps. This is generally no longer viable as many published maps are 10-20 years old, and quite out of date. There is also no scope for customising the information you need to show. DNRE holds more up to date information in digital form but no longer publishes maps at the required scale. In any event these are not optimised for the specific requirements of fire management.

Spatial Vision was contracted to build on a previous NRE Fire Management project where we automated the production of 1:25,000 and 1:100,000 maps in a state-wide coverage (1,700 maps) in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. For the Horsham District wall map, the latest 1:25,000 VicMap Digital Road Network was sourced to provide road name and surface information. A satellite image, captured in 2000, was colour adjusted and enhanced with park, forest and reserve public land boundaries and used as a backdrop.

Horsham NRE Office now has a comprehensive large format (2.3m by 2.4m) 1:100,000 wall map customised to their specific requirements.
