Victorian Image Directory

E-mail Print

The Department of Sustainability & Environment recently launched the web-based Victorian Image Directory (VID). The aim of VID is to facilitate the provision of aerial photography and satellite image coverage of Victoria by users in state and local government, and private industry. VID enables users to locate imagery by both map-based and textual search facilities. The website does not make the imagery itself available, but provides details of matching imagery, including contact details, as metadata. The metadata is maintained by private and government image owners through a second secure web application.

A unique feature of VID is a facility allowing users to register an intention to acquire imagery over a specific area to elicit interest from others, allowing them to develop partnering arrangements to share the cost of acquisition.

Spatial Vision was contracted to develop VID. On project commencement, Spatial Vision undertook detailed website design and development of the data model for the supporting metadata.

Spatial Vision then undertook the development of the various application components using Java/JSP and the Apache Struts framework.  The VID spatial data is held in ArcSDE/Oracle and the textual data in Oracle.  ArcIMS provides the web mapping functionality and is accessed via the ArcIMS JavaBeans connector.  Spatial Vision also developed a range of documentation including system documentation and user documentation for both the public and private websites.

The VID is a component of the Victorian Government comprehensive Land Channel, a portal to land, resource and property information and services in Victoria, see www.land.vic.gov.au.
