Emergency Coordination Centre State-Wide Wall Map

E-mail Print
Client: Rinske Poulier, Fire Management, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Victoria

The Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) is the State’s coordination centre for suppression of wildfire on public land. The ECC assists in planning and is crucial to the coordination of an appropriate response to control and suppress wildfires.

Much of the Centre’s focus is a 1:250,000 scale state-wide situation map mounted on the wall at the front of the room. The map is used to provide an overview of the current fire or emergency situations and encompasses the state of Victoria and at least 30 Kilometres into South Australia and New South Wales. In 2004 the ECC was moved to a new location at 8 Nicholson Street Melbourne. A new wall map was required.

In the past, wall maps were prepared from published topographic base maps. This is generally no longer viable as many published maps are 10-20 years old, and quite out of date. There is also no scope for customising the information you need to show.

The new wall map prepared by Spatial Vision, utilised Vicmap Digital data to provide an up-to-date view of the infrastructure and major assets across the state.  The use of a muted version of satellite imagery provides depiction of the terrain and highlights the forested / cleared areas of the state. Land managed by the various agencies is classified and depicted using an outlining technique that combines the land classifications and the imagery.

DSE’s ECC now has a comprehensive large format (4.1m by 2.5m) 1:250,000 wall map customised to their specific requirements.
