Australia’s newest Biosecurity system

E-mail Print

Australia’s newest biosecurity system has taken out the 2008 Spatially Enabling Government Award at the Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards.

As a result of winning the State prize, the Biosecurity, Surveillance, Incident Response, and Tracing (BioSIRT) application was nominated for the Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards under the same category of Spatially Enabling Government.

The BioSIRT project is a comprehensive information system that will be used by all state and territories to manage and respond to incidents of animal and plant diseases and pest incursions.

“As the name suggests this new system allows the multiple organisations involved in biosecurity incident response to enter information into the system in real time and map out the incident for surveillance and tracing both in field-based control centres and state disease control headquarters” said Ian Miller, Project Director at Spatial Vision.

The program has been developed by Spatial Vision in collaboration with Commonwealth, State and Territory Departments of Agriculture and Primary Industries and addresses some of the most important management issues in responding to incidents of biosecurity.

“We have had a sizeable team working on this project for several years and it is very satisfying to see the fruits of our labour as the application is implemented” said Mr Miller.
