ArcGIS Training for Port Phillip and Westernport CMA

E-mail Print
Client:  Viv Charalambous, Environmental Projects Manager, Port Phillip & Westernport CMA (CMA)

Many organisations are unable to make effective use of their investment in GIS technology. One factor contributing to this is that their staff do not have the appropriate software skills. Spatial Vision delivers custom training courses in the use of GIS software allowing clients to acquire the skills and information they require.

In order to maximise the effectiveness of these courses, our training is tailored around an organisation’s data and business practices. Our courses are customised to use our client’s data which makes it easier for their staff to learn how to use the software because they are using data that they are familiar with, that is relevant to them or, at least, that they will understand. Staff can focus their learning on the software rather than having to learn about the data they are using.

Using a client’s data, rather than standard data which may not be relevant to their operations, also has the advantage of getting staff familiar with data they will use for their actual GIS operations.

The Port Phillip and Westernport CMA (PPWCMA) is one of ten regional Catchment Management Authorities (CMA) in Victoria. It covers 1.3 million hectares including urban, rural farmland and forest areas, including the Melbourne Metropolitan area.

The CMA works with a number of stakeholder groups to provide integrated catchment management and sustainable use of the region’s catchment assets.

The PPWCMA uses maps in its daily operations and has a number of ESRI ArcView licences. Spatial Vision was contracted to deliver a two day training course to PPWCMA staff. The feedback from the course highlighted that the data, environment and structure of the course assisted staff to learn the concepts and operational use of the ArcView product.

“Recently, members of our NRM team undertook GIS training by Spatial Vision. We were very satisfied with the course provided. Spatial Vision interpreted our brief and tailored a course around our organisation’s needs. Course notes and exercises were developed using local data from our operations. This meant that during the course we were able to address GIS problems we face on a day to day basis, with content that was both relevant and immediately useful to us.”
