ArcGIS Training for City of Port Phillip

In 2009 the City of Port Phillip implemented new corporate GIS software using the ESRI suite of products (including ArcSDE, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server and Dekho). Dekho, replacing Latitude, was delivered to the majority of staff who need to run some simple spatial enquiries, generate reports and print standard maps. Specialist staff previously using MapInfo for their data creation and map production were migrated to the ESRI ArcGIS environment.

One factor contributing to organisations’ inability to make effective use of their investment in GIS technology is that their staff do not have appropriate software skills. As part of their move from MapInfo, the City of Port Phillip’s GIS Department contracted Spatial Vision to run customised ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 training to its MapInfo users. The Council opted for customised training to make the transition from MapInfo as quick as possible and to assist staff to adopt the new GIS desktop software.
In order to maximise the effectiveness of the course, Spatial Vision tailored the training around City of Port Phillip’s data and business practices. The course was customised to use the Council’s data to make it easier for staff to learn how to use the software. This approach ensured that the data was familiar and relevant to them. Staff could focus their learning on the software rather than having to learn about the data they were using.

Using a client’s data, rather than standard data which may not be relevant to their operations, also has the advantage of getting staff familiar with data they will use for their actual GIS operations.

Spatial Vision delivered a three day course to a small group of Council staff. This provided them with the skills in ArcView to begin to use the software for their GIS operations. The group was predominantly made up of staff from departments responsible for the creation, management and maintenance of Council’s assets as they have the responsibility to maintaining the Council’s GIS data for these assets.

Demonstrated Capabilities

Ability to prepare and present training courses tailored to meet the skill levels, business system context, and financial and time constraints of clients.
Ability to work closely with clients to prepare customised ArcGIS training courses that utilise client spatial and non-spatial data.
Ability to prepare well presented and appropriately focused user training manuals.
Extensive expertise in the collation and standardisation of spatial data as a preparatory stage to training course.
Extensive expertise to review and understand client data and a broad range of ArcGIS based systems developed by other parties, and undertake training in these for users.
Sound understanding of the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop product, and its key components and modules.

Resources
