Mobile Water Shutoff Tool

E-mail Print
Client: Bill Haigh, GIS Manager at Gippsland Water

Gippsland Water has implemented customised tools in ArcView to enable water shutoff blocks to be visualised in the GIS. The products of the water shutoff tool are maps displaying and listing the valves, water mains and fireplugs in the shutoff block and textual reports listing the customers affected by the shutoff. The tools utilise ArcGIS network tracing and geodatabase functionality.

The ArcView tools are intended to be used by office staff with access to the corporate ArcSDE geodatabase. However, Gippsland Water also has a large field office crew that require access to similar functionality in a disconnected environment. Spatial Vision was contracted to develop a solution for field staff who require the ability to visualise water shutoff blocks.

Spatial Vision designed and deployed the mobile shutoff tool as a custom ArcPad application operating on a handheld PDA. The shutoff tool is presented to the user as two tool buttons on the ArcPad interface.

The first button, Water Shutoff simulates the network trace tool available in ArcView. Users click on a pipe in the map where a breakage has occurred/planned works is to take place. The application simulate a water shutoff and highlights the affected pipes, valves to shutoff and the customers affected.

A second Reporting button provides information about the trace analysis that was undertaken. It displays information about the water pipe on which a burst occurred or on which a shutdown is planned. It also displays the barcode of the pipes affected by the shutdown and a list of the barcodes and addresses of the valves to be closed. The tool also displays the number of customers affected by the shutoff.

The mobile water shut-off tool has been initially deployed to Gippsland Water field coordination staff and very well received.
