Groundwater in Victoria is administered through Groundwater Management Units (GMU), that define 3D volumes of the earth that each carry different usage, licensing and legal constraints.
Effective management of groundwater requires an understanding of three dimensional nature of the resource. The Department of Sustainability & Environment (DSE) has begun to explore 3D representation of groundwater resources and commissioned Spatial Vision to produce a prototype to illustrate relationships between management units.
Spatial Vision developed a web-based platform for planners and policy makers to visualise GMU in 3D and access related management information. The 3D prototype is developed using a gaming platform to maximise the useability and not limit its use to technical people.
A key component of the web-solution was the ability to link to management information held in DSE’s Groundwater Management Unit Inventory. In this way, the 3D visualisation tool serves as a means to explore and access related information.
Spatial Vision is currently hosting the models as part of its Groundwater Management Page: http://www.spatialvision.com.au/html/GMU_VRML/index.html
