BioSIRT Application Nears Deployment

E-mail Print

BioSIRT (Bio-Security, Surveillance, Incident Response and Tracing) is a new computer application being developed by Spatial Vision under a nationally coordinated program on behalf of all Australian Jurisdictions for managing emergency and routine incidents of disease, pests or incursions.

BioSIRT is a web-based J2EE application which makes use of open standards GIS protocols to maximise interoperability with Jurisdictional GIS systems. BioSIRT uses a number of open source GIS servers including MapServer and GeoServer to deliver its internal spatial functionality.

The first two stages of the BioSIRT application project, design and development, are largely complete and the stand alone version of BioSIRT has been successfully test deployed by Jurisdictions. The next few months should see final functionality and reports completed and ready for initial release. Following this, a number of field trials of BioSIRT will be undertaken to ensure it is ready to meet the demanding requirements of an emergency incident.

The third stage of the application project is also underway and involves detailed consulting with each Jurisdiction to develop a plan for how BioSIRT will be deployed in their environment and how it will integrate with existing information systems, especially their property database and GIS.

Other work being undertaken under the national program includes plan ning exactly how BioSIRT will be used in each Jurisdiction and develop ing a standardized national mapping symbology for BioSIRT that will build on existing work such as the Australasian All Hazards Symbology project.
