Murray River Recreational User Guide – Map Booklet Series

E-mail Print

The Murray River stretches for over 2,600 kilometres, from the Great Dividing Range in the north east of Victoria to its mouth at Goolwa in South Australia.  The Murray River is one of the world’s longest navigable rivers and a major source of water for much of south-eastern Australia.

To meet growing demand by users of the river for authoritative information on river access, and reference material including services available from local towns, Spatial Vision is preparing a series of Murray River Recreational User Guide Booklets.

The first two map booklets cover the section of the river between Ulupna Island and Yarrawonga, and section of river between Barmah township and Torrumbarry Weir, which includes Echuca.   Map booklets for other sections of the river are due for release shortly.

Designed for visitors touring these areas, the booklets have information regarding recreation facilities including camping, boating and fishing within NSW and Victorian Parks and Forests, and major walks.

Production of the map booklets has been supported by local tourism groups, local traders, local government, and catchment management authorities.

The booklets are targeted at the many visitors to the regions covered who will use the river for recreational purposes such as fishing, skiing, walking, camping, picnicking, or stay in nearby towns.

The booklets have also proven valuable to a range of other users: “May I congratulate you on your publication of the Murray River Access booklet. It is a clear concise document that the Tocumwal & District Search & Rescue Squad now have in all vehicles and headquarters and will be invaluable for calls from the river which are at times from people in stressful situations.”

The booklets are A4 in size and map both banks of the Murray River  at a scale of 1:25,000.   The booklets also include emergency and other helpful contact information.  Parks Victoria and NSW Department of Primary Industry have on occasions provided assistance by field checking some of the map detail.
