Coliban Water

Client: David Hunter, Coliban Water

Coliban Water provides 130,000 retail, urban and rural water customers with water and wastewater services, over an area of 16,500 square kilometres of Central and Northern Victoria.  To support this activity, Coliban Water captured a range of GIS information in Eagle GIS, including property details and water and sewer assets.  In addition, Coliban Water developed a variety of corporate databases for asset management, customer billing, customer management, water modelling and so on.

Coliban Water identified that they needed to get more value from their GIS information and provide an easier to use system that could be accessed by all Coliban Water staff.  The new system needed to provide better integration with Coliban Water’s corporate databases to enable integrated queries.  The system also needed to enable easy access to queries such as the identification of customers affected by a burst pipe.

Spatial Vision was awarded the contract to supply a new GIS and related system integration services to Coliban Water, based on the ESRI range of GIS software.  The solution comprises ArcSDE to enable storage of the spatial information in a Microsoft SQL Server RDBMS, ArcGIS to provide powerful editing and analysis capabilities and Enterprise View (EView) for broad corporate GIS access.

Spatial Vision delivered this solution in a staged manner. The first stage was to design a “geodatabase” to hold Coliban Water’s spatial data.  The second stage was to convert their existing Eagle GIS data via a custom developed migration process including significant data reformatting and restructuring.  Spatial Vision, working with ESRI Australia, then installed and configured the required software and loaded the converted data.  The final stage was documentation and training.

Coliban Water are now fully operational with the new system and over the coming months will be refining and extending the various GIS “views” used by their staff.
