A Fox Predation Risk Calculator - a Biodiversity Risk 'Proof of Concept' Project

E-mail Print
Client: Simon Baker, Department of Sustainability and Environment – Office of Water, Victoria

Parks Victoria (PV) has a responsibility for managing the impact of pest predators on the biodiversity in parks across Victoria.  PV has an active control program that represents a significant resource allocation both in staff time and materials.  For some time PV have been looking for a systematic way to allocate these resources to best effect.  PV staff routinely use spatial information technology and data in park planning, and as such are strongly aware of the usefulness of a GIS-based solution.

Spatial Vision was invited by Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research (ARI) to partner in a “proof of concept” project to develop a GIS-based fox predation risk calculator. This calculator was to be based on research outcomes into application of a multi-criteria decision modelling paradigm to biodiversity risk assessment.

Spatial Vision’s role in the proof of concept project involved two key components to the risk calculation concept:

  • Migration of an EXCEL-based simulation engine to the ArcGIS geodatabase environment
  • Identification of the process pathway that would enable full utilisation of available spatial information in the geodatabase simulation engine and identification of key information products to be visualised within an ArcMap interface.

Spatial Vision utilised its extensive expertise in development of analytical methodologies, geodatabase design and application development to assist in realising ARI’s research efforts. The culmination of this project was the development of an integrated spatial analytical environment. A comprehensive presentation was created by Spatial Vision to outline the development of the GIS environment, as well as present the formal application specification describing the system design and functionality.

Demonstrated Capabilities

  • Extensive experience in developing GIS process methodologies
  • Extensive experience in design and development of geodatabases
  • Development of raster-based spatial pattern analysis methodologies
