E-mail Print
Client: John Martin  (03) 9412 4636  Fire Management Branch, Department of Natural Resources and Environment

The Fire Management Branch (FMB), located within the Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) is responsible for the provision of fire prevention and suppression works in National Parks, State forests and other protected public land in Victoria.  Fire-related information databases and support systems are essential for undertaking this work.

Spatial Vision was contracted to prepare a document that identified and addressed key strategic issues influencing the application of geospatial information within the Fire Management Branch, including technology and data issues, and recommendations for future directions for the use of this technology within the Branch.

Preparation of this strategic plan document coincided with the development of an integrated web-based fire information system that will incorporate mapping and spatial modelling functionality.

The strategy document identifies how geospatial information technology can be used by Fire Management Branch staff, both in the field and in head-office, to access, integrate, visualise and utilise, most, if not all, spatial data of relevance.  Spatial technology will assist staff in undertaking all planning, management, research, and operational aspects of fire related emergency and non-emergency activities.

Implementation of this strategy will see the incorporation of geospatial information technology into the day to day management responsibilities and activities of fire managers, including all relevant aspects of fire suppression operations.
