GIS Strategy for North Central CMA

E-mail Print

Client: Colin Francis, North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA)

The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is based in Northern Victoria and covers an area of around three million hectares (13 per cent of the State).

Like many CMAs, the North Central CMA currently uses GIS to support many activities but see the need to better integrate the technology and data into their business systems and processes. The Authority already operates various GIS tools and manages an extensive library of over 200 datasets.

Gavin Hanlon, North Central CMA CEO, stated that, “The North Central CMA aims to adapt its use of GIS technology so that it can share information with the community and other agencies to enable better NRM outcomes for the North Central region.”

Spatial Vision consultants were contracted by the North Central CMA to guide the development of a vision for the role that GIS should play in its future and the production of a road map to navigate the many challenges to achieve this vision.

The many challenges included understanding the wealth of choices for software, technology platforms, database options, data management approaches, interoperability and interfaces to business systems.

Throughout the process of developing the GIS Strategy, the Spatial Vision team consulted with North Central CMA staff to ascertain the needs and requirements of GIS technology and to assist them to understand the relevant issues and options for its future use.

The GIS Strategy was accepted by the North Central CMA Executive Team and implementation is well underway.
