Biodiversity Analysis using Ecological Vegetation Class Information

The health and protection of indigenous plants and animals, and the ecosystems in which they are found, is a key environmental issue.  The maintenance of adequate levels of biodiversity is a well recognised environmental management objective.  Ecological vegetation classes (EVC) mapping is increasingly being used in Victoria to assist in broad level land management planning and biodiversity management.

EVCs are derived from an analysis of floristic data held in the Flora Information System, of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE).  EVCs can consist of one, or a number of floristic communities existing under a common regime of ecological processes within a particular environment at a regional, state or continental scale, and were developed by NRE for strategic conservation planning.

Spatial Vision was commissioned by Parks, Flora and Fauna, NRE to create digital 1:100 000 scale datasets for the state showing pre-1750 (prior to European settlement) and extant EVCs using available digital data.  The company also prepared area statements by Victorian Bioregion to support NRE and Catchment Management Authorities (CMA) in the preparation of regional Native Vegetation Plans.  An analysis of the resultant information was then used to assign a conservation status to extant EVCs and subsequently maps were produced for each CMA identifying the extent of threatened and depleted EVCs.
