Client: Kay Bartlett, Australian Electoral Commission Victorian Division.
The Victorian Division of the Australian Electoral Commission maintains electoral roll information for the entire state of Victoria. AEC staff frequently need to check which local, state and federal electoral region a specific property address is located within.
The AEC engaged Spatial Vision to develop an easy to use, widely accessible system that would enable AEC staff to search for an address and check its electoral information.
The solution, built using open source software for client and server components, consisted of:
- An easy to use, custom web mapping client showing topographic, property, address and electoral boundary spatial layers. The client was built using the OpenLayers, MapFish and Ext.js libraries.
- MapServer for base WMS image spatial layers and GeoServer for WFS services.
- Efficient and flexible address searching, built using a combination of custom Java servlets and GeoServer WFS services.
- Supply, licensing and database hosting of Victorian Government Address and Property (Vicmap) spatial datasets, Australian Bureau of Statistics and Electoral Commission spatial boundary datasets.
Spatial Vision provided a complete solution to the AEC including
application design and development, database storage, regular
maintenance and data updates and ongoing web hosting and support.
Demonstrated Capabilities
- Open source GIS custom application development.
- Victorian government Vicmap data supply and packaging.
- Web and database hosting including the hosting of complex spatial data.
- Ongoing support including regular updating of spatial datasets, telephone and email support.
