Managing Remnant Vegetation in Western Sydney

E-mail Print
Client: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service

Protection of biodiversity in the western areas of Sydney is a significant issue.  Remnant vegetation in this region is under significant development pressure.  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) plays a leading role in providing stakeholder groups with key information on the conservation significance of remnant vegetation in this region.

NSW NPWS required a means to highlight the issue to local authorities and distribute information to assist Councils with the management of this valuable resource.

NPWS commissioned Spatial Vision to create a series of high quality maps and related area statements on a Local Government Area basis for the Cumberland Plain region (essentially the western area of Greater Sydney) showing the current distribution of ecological communities and areas of conservation significance, based on current and pre-1750 vegetation mapping and modelling.

Spatial Vision has also produced a CD-based information package on the conservation significance of the vegetation for the Cumberland Plains. The CD is to be distributed to each of the councils in the Cumberland Plain region and public outlets, such as libraries. This multimedia CD provides easy access to high quality biodiversity mapping and related vegetation assessment information, statistics, reports and links to supporting web-based information.

The maps on the CD are supplied as PDF files with the ability to drill down to specific localities or retain a regional perspective. The CD also includes spatial data that the authorities may load into their existing GIS.
