Old-Growth Forest Analysis

E-mail Print
Client: Ross Penny (03) 9412 4184  Forest Management, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Victoria

The need to determine the extent of old growth forest in Victoria is directly linked to the requirements of the Regional Forest Agreement process.  Old growth forest has a complex definition based on a matrix of ecological maturity and the current levels of disturbance.  The definition has no direct mappable equivalent and therefore requires a model-based approach.  This approach is reinforced by the relatively low quality of historic data.

The complexity of the process was also magnified by the fact that forest response to disturbance is region specific.  This meant that the framework developed needed to be highly modularised to enable efficient re-assembling of the model to align with regional specific characteristics.

Spatial Vision staff in their present capacity and as former employees of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment have been responsible for the design, development and management of Old Growth forest analysis projects conducted for East Gippsland, the Central Highlands, the North-East, Goldfields, Gippsland, Otways Ranges, Midlands and the Portland-Wimmera forest management areas.

Demonstrated Capabilities

  • Proven capacities to organise, collation, standardise and quality test high volumes of geospatial data from distributed sources.
  • Design and development of an applied grid analysis framework and procedures optimised for dynamic rule development.
  • Proven ability to coordinate and conduct feedback workshops with regional stakeholders in a highly volatile atmosphere.
  • Proven ability to work in partnership with other organisations and professions on larger projects with critical timelines.

Resources

Milos Pelikan was the primary designer and developer of analytical methodologies, techniques and procedures, as well as being the lead AML programmer.

Stephen Farrell was the project manager and coordinator for the significant effort in data collation and standardisation.
